The Fair Trade Diamond Fund was designed and created by Australia's largest independent diamond certification house, AUSCERT (www.auscertdiamonds.com.au).The call to action came after watching a SBS documentary entitled "The Diamond Road". This ground breaking program brought to light the shocking history of blood diamonds and the current conditions and lifestyle of Africa's poorest diamond miners.
AUSCERT'S directors discovered that they were in a unique position to instigate a system that allowed persons in Australia involved in a diamond sale (through donation) the opportunity to add their assistance in reducing the plight of Africa's diamond miners and help repair past damage done.
Though the civil wars that ravaged an impoverished nation have long since gone, the damage from those dark days can still be felt and seen in the survivors. Many have to live with the mental and physical handicaps from the deliberate removal of limbs by the rebel solders during the terrors.
Monies raised will be used to build houses and schools, dig wells, provide adequate medical services and many other worthwhile projects. The distribution of the all funds raised is overseen by The Rapaport Group. Martin Rapaport has established "The Fair Trade Diamond and Jewellery Council" that has people positioned in key areas to make sure the funds reach the intended persons.
